High Protein Orange Chocolate Christmas Truffles

High Protein Orange Chocolate Christmas Truffles - recipe card

These indulgent yet wholesome truffles combine rich dark chocolate with bright citrus, featuring a creamy Greek yogurt and protein powder center. Each bite delivers a satisfying protein boost, making them a perfect festive treat that won’t derail your goals.

Ingredients

Scale
  • 3/4 cup old-fashioned rolled oats
  • 1 scoop (30g) vanilla or unflavored whey protein powder
  • 1/4 cup unsweetened cocoa powder
  • 1/2 tsp fine sea salt
  • 1/2 cup full-fat Greek yogurt
  • 2 tbsp honey
  • 1 tsp pure vanilla extract
  • 1 tbsp fresh orange zest (from about 2 large oranges)
  • 2 tbsp fresh orange juice
  • 1/3 cup dark chocolate chips (60% cacao or higher)
  • 1 tsp coconut oil

Instructions

  1. Line a small baking sheet with parchment paper and set aside.
  2. In a medium bowl, whisk together the rolled oats, protein powder, cocoa powder, and salt until evenly combined and no clumps remain.
  3. Add the Greek yogurt, honey, vanilla extract, orange zest, and orange juice to the dry ingredients. Stir with a spatula until a thick, sticky dough forms. If the mixture seems too wet, add 1 tablespoon more oats; if too dry, add 1 teaspoon more orange juice.
  4. Cover the bowl and refrigerate the dough for 20 minutes to firm up. This makes it easier to roll.
  5. Using a small cookie scoop or tablespoon, portion the dough into 12 equal balls, about 1 inch in diameter. Roll each between your palms to smooth.
  6. Place the truffles on the prepared baking sheet and freeze for 15 minutes while you prepare the chocolate coating. This step prevents the truffles from melting when dipped.
  7. In a small microwave-safe bowl, combine the dark chocolate chips and coconut oil. Microwave in 20-second intervals, stirring after each, until the chocolate is melted and smooth. Alternatively, melt in a double boiler over barely simmering water.
  8. Remove the truffles from the freezer. Using a fork, dip each truffle into the melted chocolate, letting excess drip off. Return to the baking sheet.
  9. If desired, sprinkle a little extra orange zest over the tops before the chocolate sets.
  10. Refrigerate the truffles for at least 30 minutes, or until the chocolate coating is firm.
  11. Store in an airtight container in the refrigerator for up to 5 days, or freeze for up to 2 months.

Notes

For a non-alcoholic version, the orange juice and zest provide plenty of citrus flavor. If you prefer a stronger orange taste, add 1/4 teaspoon orange extract to the dough. For a protein boost, use a protein powder that blends well and has at least 20g protein per scoop. These truffles are gluten-free if using certified gluten-free oats.
